The A.C.C.C. Conference was well organized, provided stimulating experiences
and new contacts, and valuable information on the Canadian scene. |
especially appreciated the sessions on long-range planning that I attended.
They will be of substantial value to the College in due course.

Following the ACCC Conference was a meeting of the Council of Principals
and thereafter, a meeting of the B.C. Association of Colleges in Penticton.
The meeting of the Council of Principals was consumed primarily with the
impact on Colleges of the Canadian Jobs Strategy, and the $110 Million
Excellence in Education Fund, plus the legislation for the forthcoming Open
Learning Authority. Our points of view in these matters were provided to
the B.C.A.C. Executive, and to Ministry Staff. THe B.C.A.C. Executive
is devoting some time this week to reviewing the matter of the Open Learning
Authority, and I will be attending a meeting on Friday with the Executive,
to provide them with the points of view of the Principals. The B.C.A.C.
has been extremely active on the topic of the Excellence in Education Fund,
with substantially positive results.

The B.C.A.C. meeting was well attended, and was a valuable chance for the
Boards of the Colleges & Institutes to communicate with each other about
common concerns. Mr. G. Trerise, of our Board, is the new Vice-President
of the B.C.A.C. It is a pleasure to see Douglas College Board members
assuming a prominent role in Provincial educational affairs.

On Wednesday, June 18, the Hon. R. Fraser convened a meeting of Board Chairmen
and C.E.0.'s of the Colleges & Institutes, in order to acquaint them with
the decisions regarding the Excellence in Education Fund. 14 Million have
been released for a mixture of Capital and Operating projects. I am pleased
to announce that Douglas College has received funds to develop our Maple
Ridge Centre, and also to develop an increased capacity in the Entertainment
Arts. In addition, we have had an allocation for Operating Capital which
will be of direct relief to our budget.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry respected the priorities offered to them
by the Colleges in making allocations. The direct grant to Douglas College
from the Excellence in Education Fund is $400,500, wich includes $150,500
for "general equipment" upgrading. In addition, the College Computer
Consortium, of which Douglas College is a member, has received a $2 Million
Grant in Aid to upgrade joint computer facilities.

Internal Matters - Education

On May 20 & 21, the Faculty Professional Development Days were held. The
program was excellently organized, with a very high calibre of presenters.
The turnout of faculty was dismayingly low. The P.D. Committee has the
matter under review at this time. They will be making recommendations to
Management Committee in due course.

On May 21, the Summer Language Bursary Students from the Province of Quebec
had their first session. They are a large, and enthusiastic group of young
people, whom it was a pleasure to welcome on behalf of Douglas College.
